Vijaya Ekadashi is observed on the Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of the month of Phalguna. It is considered one of the most auspicious days dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The word “Vijaya” means victory, and observing this fast is believed to bless devotees with success, remove obstacles, and destroy sins.
Significance of Vijaya Ekadashi
The importance of this Ekadashi is mentioned in Padma Purana and Skanda Purana. It is said that observing Vijaya Ekadashi helps one attain liberation after death and removes all sorrows. Lord Vishnu blesses his devotees with peace, prosperity, and victory in all endeavors.
- It is believed that observing this Ekadashi helps a person attain success and victory in their endeavors.
- As per Hindu mythology, Lord Rama observed Vijaya Ekadashi before crossing the ocean to rescue Sita from Ravana. With the blessings of Lord Vishnu, he succeeded in his mission.
- Observing a Vrat (fast) on this day is said to wash away sins and bring prosperity and peace.
Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat Rituals
- Fasting: Devotees observe a strict fast from sunrise on Ekadashi till the next day (Dwadashi). Some follow a nirjala (waterless) fast, while others consume fruits, milk, and nuts.
- Puja and Prayers: Worship of Lord Vishnu with Tulsi leaves, incense, lamps, and flowers. Reciting Vishnu Sahasranama or Ekadashi Vrat Katha is considered auspicious.
- Charity and Donations: Offering food and essentials to Brahmins and the needy is recommended.
- Avoidance of Grains: Grains, rice, and certain vegetables (like onions and garlic) are avoided.
According to the legend, before Lord Rama crossed the ocean to reach Lanka, he observed Vijaya Ekadashi fast on the advice of Sage Bakadalabhya. With the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Shri Rama was able to defeat Ravana and achieve victory. Since then, this Ekadashi is known as Vijaya Ekadashi, symbolizing success and triumph.
