Spiti Valley Trip-Covered Kunzum Pass, Chandratal, Batal and Rohtang Pass

The last day was a superb and unique experience for all of us. We have covered UNESCO recognised Tabo Monastery, Kaza, Asia highest Komic Village, beautiful Langza Village and night stay in Losar.

Today, in the morning of 14-July 2015, I slept till late morning around 7:30 AM, but other guys went for a morning walk and captured some good memories in camera. Losar to Chandratal was just two-hour drive, so we started our journey late in the morning around 11:00 AM. Our water and snacks stock was over, so we brought one dozen water and snacks from Losar and moved towards next destination. The weather was sunny and windy, so this was the best time for camping near Chandratal Lake.

After half an hour drive, we again in the beautiful location where one side was a river and another side was a carpet of different color flowers. The whole valley was looked like Valley of Flowers. Today, we saw a lot of foreign tourist on cycle. We chatted with one girl; she told us that by cycling you can enjoy more in compare to a motor car. I think cycling in mountains is more adventures than bike or car.

Kunzum Pass

One KM before Kunzum Pass, we stopped our car for photo session because that point was the best location for photography. The ground was full of yellow color flowers and mountains were covered with snow. Everyone was distributed in a different group in a different pose and then group photo after an individual photo shoot.

All of us at Kunzum Pass

After few minutes drive, we were at Kunzum Pass (4,590 meters or 15,060 feet). There was a lot of tourist from a different country. Kunzum Pass is also famous for Kunzum Mata temple and Gompa. So all of us first visited in the temple and done one round circle according to Hindu methodology. Our driver Deshraj told us that every vehicle passed from Kunzum Pass must take a round circle to go farther.

After 20 minute stay, we moved towards Chandratal Lake and took another break for photo session near direction board of Chandratal. Chandratal was 16 KM from that point; 14.5 KM was jeepable and 1.5 KM need to cover by foot.

on the way to Chandratal Lake

We reached around 2:00 PM at Chandratal and booked our camp for night stay. The camp was two KM before the Lake and vehicle were allowed half KM before the lake. Actually, we don't want to waste time, so we move towards lake along with our luggage.

All boys at Chandratal Lake

Now, we need to half km small trek to reach near the lake. This was easy because most of the time we need to go down. After 10-15 minute walk, the lake was viewable. Everyone just said wow, water was totally blue color and the lake was having a great view.

Chandratal Lake, Spiti Valley

We cannot describe the beauty of this place in words; even you cannot capture the beauty of this place in your camera. I think only and only open eyes are the best camera gifted by god; was capable for this. Me, Amby, Varun and Saurabh were decided to take round circle of Lake, but girls were not ready for this because of the biggest size of the lake. Amby came with us for half KM and decided to go back because girls were alone on another side.

Vivek and Amby at Candratal Lake

Every turning point was looked like end point of the lake, but after that, we saw another turning point. I think the lake was 1.5 KM long and finally, we reached on another side. Lake was more beautiful from another side. One side was a beautiful lake and another side was lush green fields. After some photo capture, we started returning and successfully completed round circle of the lake. This was the best site for our trip, we spent around 3-4 worth hour here.

Best group photo at Chandratal Lake

When we returned, Amby, Ruchika and Shibba were not there. Actually, they were going with driver for another small lake and then moved towards the car. This was easy to come down in hills, but it was very hard to climb up. We managed this by taking some breaks and finally we reached near our car.

Vivek at Chandratal Lake

This was really the coldest night of our trip because we were at 14,100 feet height. Camping was the first experience for few members in our group. This was really an unforgettable experience for all of us. After dinner, we also enjoyed a bonfire and chatted with other travellers.

Next day in the morning of 15-July 2015, we woke up around 6:00 AM and got ready to leave this beautiful location. Varun and Saurabh were not in Camp, so we started searching them. Suddenly Saurabh called us and we saw that both were climbing on the adjacent hill like mountain Ibex. Ruchika was started recording for this moment and I started capturing a photo.

Around 8:00 AM, we left camp after breakfast. After one hour drive we were at Batal, and again first-day story was started repeating Batal and again first-day story was started repeating. This time Chota Dhara was more dangerous in compare to the first day. Some vehicle was stuck in that point including our too. The river was looking over flowing at that point, but finally, our driver got success to cross that point.

Batal

We took two more breaks before Marhi; one for tea and another for the photo session. We had lunch again at Marhi and taken next stop at Rohtang Pass. Only Shibba, Varun and Saurabh went outside from car at Rohtang Pass. There were foggy weather and approx zero visibility. Rohtang was overloaded with tourist because of a lot of snow.

Around 3:30 PM, we reached Manali and booked bus tickets (Bus timing was 5:00 PM). We said goodbye and thanks to our driver Deshraj for best driving. Our phone was started working after five days. Only BSNL network catches in some place of Spiti Valley, so everyone was dependent on driver phone. I and Ruchika had tea and packed some snacks for bus travelling.

Next day in the morning of 16-July 2015, around 9:00 AM, we reached Delhi and this was the end of our beautiful trip. Thanks Amby for planning this adventurous and beautiful trip and thanks, all of you for making this trip for unforgettable.
