Hartalika Teej: A Divine Celebration of Faith and Love
Hartalika Teej is more than just a ritual - it’s a celebration of love, faith, and tradition. Whether through fasting, prayers, or festive gatherings, this festival keeps the spirit of devotion alive in every woman’s heart.
Hartalika Teej is a beautiful Hindu festival celebrated with immense devotion, especially by women across North and Central India. This auspicious day is dedicated to Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva, symbolizing love, marital bliss, and a wife’s unwavering dedication to her husband.
In 2025, Hartalika Teej will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 2. The festival falls on the Tritiya Tithi (third day) of the Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.
Why is Hartalika Teej Celebrated?
Hartalika Teej honors the legendary love story of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. According to mythology, Parvati performed intense penance to win Shiva’s heart. Her devotion moved him, and he accepted her as his wife. The festival celebrates this divine union, and women observe fasts to seek blessings for a happy married life or to find an ideal life partner.
The name "Hartalika" comes from two words - "Harat" (abduction) and "Aalika" (friend). The legend says that Parvati’s friend helped her escape an unwanted marriage by hiding her in a forest, where she meditated for Lord Shiva.
